Best VPS and Dedicated Servers for FiveM (2026 Buying Guide)
The best VPS for a FiveM server is one with fast single-thread CPU, enough RAM for your player count and resources, NVMe storage, a data center near your players, and DDoS filtering that understands game (UDP) traffic. For most new roleplay servers that means a mid-range VPS (not a managed game server slot) from a host such as Contabo (our pick and hosting partner), Vultr or DigitalOcean, and a dedicated server once you pass about 100 slots.
Affiliate disclosure. Some links are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Contabo is our hosting partner and our first pick; we say so openly.
- Our pick for most new servers: a Contabo Performance VPS, from our hosting partner. Lots of RAM for the money, recent AMD EPYC CPUs and NVMe storage, always-on DDoS protection included, monthly terms, and locations in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. See why.
- Other good options in North America and Europe: Vultr (higher-frequency compute plans) or DigitalOcean (polished dashboard). Pick the region closest to most of your players.
- Test or dev server on a small budget: a Contabo Core VPS, or Hostinger or Hetzner (Hetzner pays us nothing, we list it because it is a sound pick).
- Game-aware DDoS filtering: OVHcloud game-oriented plans, then test with real players.
- 128 slots and up, or very heavy scripts: a dedicated server (Contabo dedicated, Cherry Servers, OVHcloud, Hetzner dedicated).
- Not tested by us on these hosts. Our installer is tested on Debian 12 and 13 on our own machines. Every host note below is a buying checklist, not a benchmark.
What specs matter for a FiveM server?
A FiveM server is not a normal web server. Most of the game logic runs on one main thread, so the speed of a single CPU core matters more than the number of cores. Extra cores help with the database, txAdmin, your web tools and background tasks, but they do not fix a slow main thread.
CPU: single-thread speed first
Look for a recent CPU generation with a high boost clock. A cheap plan with many slow shared vCPUs can feel worse than a smaller plan with fast ones. Shared vCPUs share the physical core with other customers, so performance can vary through the day. If the plan name mentions dedicated cores or a dedicated vCPU, that is the better fit for a busy server, usually at a higher price.
RAM
RAM is used by the server process, your resources (scripts, maps, vehicles), the database and the operating system. Heavy frameworks, many scripts and large streamed maps need more. Leave room: if the server runs close to its RAM limit, Linux starts swapping and everything stutters.
Storage: NVMe
NVMe storage loads resources and database queries faster than older SATA disks, and it helps with backups. Check the disk size against your streamed assets: a car pack alone can be several gigabytes, and you keep backups too.
Location and latency
Pick the data center closest to the majority of your players. A strong server far away still feels bad because of ping. If your community is split across regions, choose the region where most active players are. Every host lists its locations on its site, and they change, so check the plan you want in the location you want before paying.
DDoS filtering for game traffic
FiveM uses UDP and TCP on port 30120. Many hosts filter web traffic well but are weaker on game protocols, and some aggressive filters can block real players. Ask the host: is mitigation always on, does it cover UDP game traffic on custom ports, and is it included in the plan or an extra. Our guide on FiveM DDoS protection explains what a host can do and what your own software can and cannot do.
Bandwidth, IPv4 and root access
- Bandwidth: check whether traffic is unmetered or capped, and the port speed. Many players streaming resources at once is the heavy moment.
- IPv4: you want a dedicated public IPv4 address. Some cheap plans are IPv6 only or share an address.
- Root access and KVM-style virtualization: the panel and txAdmin setups need root. Container-based plans can restrict what you can install.
- Operating system: choose Debian 12 or 13, or Ubuntu 22.04 and newer. See Windows vs Linux for FiveM if you are unsure.
How much server do you need? A sizing guideline
These are starting points based on common community experience, not measurements by FiveMRides. Your scripts, framework and map decide the real load. Start here, watch CPU and RAM during peak hours, and upgrade when the main thread or memory stays near the limit.
| Players (slots) | Starting point | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 16 | 2 fast vCPU, 4 to 8 GB RAM, NVMe | Fine for a friends server or a test server |
| 32 | 4 vCPU, 8 to 16 GB RAM, NVMe | OneSync on, framework scripts add RAM |
| 64 | 4 to 8 fast vCPU, 16 GB RAM or more | Main thread time, database load |
| 128 and up | Dedicated server, high single-thread clock, 32 GB RAM or more | Entity count, script quality, DDoS filtering |
A sv_maxClients of 32 or more needs OneSync set to on (or the legacy mode), and above 64 it needs on, according to the official FiveM server commands page. Optimizing heavy scripts often saves more than a bigger plan.
Best VPS and dedicated hosts for FiveM, by use case
Contabo comes first because it is our hosting partner and we think it is the best value for a FiveM roleplay server. The others are listed by what they are good for. We have not benchmarked any of them with FiveM, and plans, prices, locations and DDoS features change, so each pick ends with what to check on the host’s own site before you pay. We do not print prices here for that reason.
Contabo
Contabo is our recommended host for the FiveMRides panel and our hosting partner. Its plans give a lot of vCPU, RAM and storage for the price, which is what a roleplay server with many scripts, maps and cars eats first. On its site, Contabo lists always-on DDoS protection and a firewall included with its VPS plans, unlimited traffic under a fair use policy, monthly terms with no long commitment required, and 11 locations across the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, Japan, India and Australia.
For a live public server, take the Performance VPS line (Cloud VPS Plus): Contabo describes it as running on recent AMD EPYC CPUs with NVMe storage and up to 1 Gbit/s ports. The cheaper Core VPS line is a good fit for a test server, a dev copy of your server or a small friends server.
- Good for: most new roleplay servers that need plenty of RAM on a budget, in North America, Europe or Asia Pacific, and owners who want DDoS protection without paying for an add-on.
- Be careful about: pick the location closest to your players, and test with real players during your first month: no host’s DDoS filtering is perfect for game (UDP) traffic, and the Core VPS line does not promise a specific CPU generation.
- Check: the line (Performance or Core), the location, NVMe versus SSD on the plan you pick, and the price for the term you choose.
Vultr
Vultr runs many data center locations, including a wide spread across North America and Europe, and sells several compute tiers, including higher-frequency and optimized plans aimed at performance-sensitive workloads. That is relevant to a FiveM main thread, which depends on single-thread speed. DDoS protection is available on its platform.
- Good for: most new servers that need a location close to their players, in North America or Europe, and communities spread across several regions.
- Be careful about: the higher-frequency tiers cost more, and not every region offers every tier or the same protection options.
- Check: the compute tier available in your region, the CPU description, the bandwidth allowance, and what the DDoS protection covers for UDP game traffic on port 30120.
DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean offers virtual machines called Droplets in several regions, with simple billing and a clear dashboard. It is a common choice when your players are mostly in North America.
- Good for: owners who want a polished control panel, snapshots and easy resizing.
- Be careful about: price per vCPU is usually higher than the budget hosts. Check whether the plan has dedicated CPU, and how much traffic is included before extra transfer is billed.
- Check: the CPU option (regular, premium or dedicated), region, transfer allowance, and what its network protection covers for UDP game traffic.
Hostinger
Hostinger sells KVM VPS plans that are often advertised with a low price for a long first term.
- Good for: a small server where you want a low entry cost and a simple dashboard.
- Be careful about: the advertised price may apply to the first term only. Look at the renewal price and the term length, not only the first number.
- Check: the renewal price, the CPU description, the location list and whether the plan has game-aware DDoS filtering.
Cherry Servers
Cherry Servers focuses on dedicated (bare metal) and VPS hosting. A dedicated machine removes noisy neighbors, which is useful for a large roleplay server.
- Good for: 128 slots and up, big communities, and owners who want full control of the hardware.
- Be careful about: dedicated servers cost more and are billed differently than small VPS plans. Compare the CPU single-thread score before you buy.
- Check: the CPU model, the location, the DDoS protection included and the delivery time of the machine.
OVHcloud
OVHcloud advertises DDoS mitigation on its network, with game-oriented offers. For a server that has been attacked before, a host with always-on mitigation is worth considering.
- Good for: servers that expect attacks, or rely on a relay hosted on a network that filters game traffic.
- Be careful about: community reports say strong automatic filters can sometimes block legitimate player traffic. Test with real players before you commit to a long term.
- Check: which product line includes the game-oriented mitigation, the location and the support options.
Hetzner
Hetzner has cloud servers and dedicated servers with a reputation for good value, mostly in Europe, with some cloud locations in North America. We earn nothing if you choose it. It is on this list because the honest answer for a European community on a budget often includes it.
- Good for: European communities who want a strong price to performance ratio.
- Be careful about: its network protection is general purpose, so ask how it treats game traffic. Read its terms for what you are allowed to run.
- Check: the cloud type (shared or dedicated vCPU), location and the traffic allowance.
Quick comparison
| Host | Best for | Main thing to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Contabo (our pick) | Most new servers: lots of RAM per dollar, DDoS protection included | Performance or Core line, location |
| Vultr | Low latency in North America and Europe, high-frequency tier | Tier and DDoS scope in your region |
| DigitalOcean | North America, easy resizing | CPU option, transfer allowance |
| Hostinger | Low entry cost | Renewal price |
| Cherry Servers | Dedicated, 128+ slots | CPU model, delivery time |
| OVHcloud | Game DDoS filtering | False positives, product line |
| Hetzner | Europe, value | Game traffic handling |
Plans change often. Treat this table as a map of what to look at, and read the host’s current plan page.
How to get a good deal on a FiveM VPS
- Do the math over the whole term. Compare the first term and the renewal price, plus setup fees and backups.
- Start monthly if you can. Test lag with real players for a few weeks before you commit to a long term.
- Buy for peak, not average. Evening peak hours decide whether your server feels good.
- Watch the cheap-plan traps: shared CPU on a live server, capped bandwidth, IPv6-only plans and no root access.
- Use a promotion, not a bad plan. A discount code on the wrong plan is still the wrong plan.
- Use the host’s snapshots or backups, and keep one offsite copy of your database and resources.
- Keep the option to move. A scripted install makes moving to another host a one-evening job.
How we choose, and what we earn
FiveMRides sells a FiveM server installer and web panel, and we are not a hosting company. Contabo is our hosting partner: we recommend it first and we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We chose it because its RAM and storage per dollar, included DDoS protection and monthly terms fit most FiveM roleplay servers. Some other hosts above also have an affiliate program, others do not, and one (Hetzner) pays nothing; the rest of the list follows use case. We are not affiliated with Cfx.re or Rockstar Games.
Set it up with one command and the FiveMRides panel
Once you have a Debian 12 or 13 (or Ubuntu 22.04 and newer) VPS with root access, one command starts the installer. It sets up the FiveM server, txAdmin, a database, a web panel for backups and updates, and a firewall. The guided steps are explained in the Linux install guide, and the panel is on the FiveM Server Panel page.
The FiveMRides Server Panel installs a FiveM server on your own Linux VPS with one command, then gives you a web panel for updates, backups and protection. One lifetime license, and it is also included with Studio Max and Unlimited. FiveMRides is independent software and is not affiliated with Cfx.re or Rockstar Games.
Questions about the best VPS for FiveM
What is the best VPS for a FiveM server?
The best VPS has fast single-thread CPU, enough RAM, NVMe storage, a nearby location and DDoS filtering that handles game traffic. Our pick for most new servers is a Contabo Performance VPS (our hosting partner), for its RAM per dollar, recent AMD EPYC CPUs, NVMe storage and included DDoS protection. Vultr, DigitalOcean, Hostinger, Cherry Servers, OVHcloud and Hetzner are also common choices; which one fits depends on your region, budget and player count. Take a VPS or dedicated server with root, not a managed game server slot.
How much RAM does a FiveM server need?
As a starting point, 8 to 16 GB for a 32 slot roleplay server with a framework, and 16 GB or more for 64 slots. Your scripts and streamed assets decide the real use, so watch memory at peak hours.
Is a VPS or a dedicated server better for FiveM?
A VPS is cheaper and enough for most servers up to about 64 slots. A dedicated server removes shared-CPU variation and suits 128 slots and up or very heavy script loads.
Do I need DDoS protection for a FiveM server?
Public servers are attacked sometimes, so game-aware filtering at the host is valuable, and your own firewall and relay settings help. No protection is absolute. Read our FiveM DDoS protection guide.
Can I run FiveM on a shared hosting plan?
No. FiveM needs a VPS, dedicated server or game server plan where it can run a long-lived process and open ports 30120 TCP and UDP.
Does the FiveMRides panel work on any of these hosts?
It needs a Linux VPS or dedicated server with root access. The installer is tested on Debian 12 and 13 on our own machines, and Ubuntu 22.04 and newer is accepted. We have not tested it on each host listed here.
Do you earn money if I buy through your links?
For hosts with an affiliate program, yes, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Contabo is our hosting partner and our first pick, and we say so openly. Hetzner is listed without any commission.
Which location should I choose?
Choose the data center closest to most of your active players. If your community is spread out, the region with the most evening players usually wins.
