FiveM Server: Windows vs Linux, an Honest Comparison

Both Windows and Linux can run a FiveM server. The official FiveM documentation calls the Linux version a courtesy port and says problems are more likely to be fixed on Windows, while Linux is the common choice for rented VPS servers because it needs no Windows license and is easy to script. If you want maximum official support or a familiar desktop, choose Windows; if you want a lean, automatable VPS, choose Linux.

Quick answer
  • Windows: closest to what Cfx.re tests and supports, graphical access (remote desktop), simple for beginners who know Windows.
  • Linux: no OS license fee, light on resources, easy to automate and secure, command line only.
  • Our panel is Linux only. It is built on Linux tools (systemd, a Linux firewall, nginx), and we test on Debian 12 and 13.
  • We have no benchmark of Windows against Linux for FiveM and will not quote one.

What the official docs say

The FiveM setup guide offers both platforms. On Windows the server arrives as a server.7z archive that you extract with 7-Zip or similar, and you start FXServer.exe; the Enhanced edition needs the Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable. On Linux the server arrives as fx.tar.xz and starts with run.sh. The same page states that the Linux version is provided as a courtesy port, and that if you have problems you are more likely to see them fixed on the Windows version. txAdmin works on both.

When Windows is the better choice

  • You are comfortable with Windows and want a desktop to click around in.
  • A resource or tool you rely on only runs on Windows.
  • You want the platform the FiveM team recommends when you report a bug.

When Linux is the better choice

  • You rent a VPS and want to avoid a Windows license on the bill.
  • You want to script installs, backups and updates, and reproduce the same server on a second machine.
  • You are fine with the command line, or you use a panel for the common tasks.

Why the FiveMRides panel is Linux only

The installer and panel are built on Linux tools: services are managed with systemd, the firewall is ufw, the web front end uses nginx with Let’s Encrypt, and security relies on a Linux account model where the game server runs as a normal user and cannot change the panel. Rewriting that for Windows would be a separate project with different service, firewall and permission tools, so we focused on one platform and tested it properly: Debian 12 and 13. There is no Windows version today. If you are a Windows user, txAdmin on Windows still works well, and you can rent a Linux VPS later with the best VPS for FiveM guide.

How to choose

  1. List the resources you need and check that none is Windows only.
  2. Decide how you want to administer: graphical (Windows) or command line and panel (Linux).
  3. Compare the plan price with and without a Windows license at your host.
  4. Test your real resource list for a week on the platform you picked before you commit to a long term.

Moving later is possible, since the database and resources are mostly portable, but test it before you promise players a date.

For setup steps see how to make a FiveM server and the Linux install guide.

Skip the manual work

The FiveMRides Server Panel installs a FiveM server on your own Linux VPS with one command, then gives you a web panel for updates, backups and protection. One lifetime license, and it is also included with Studio Max and Unlimited. FiveMRides is independent software and is not affiliated with Cfx.re or Rockstar Games.

Questions about Windows vs Linux for FiveM

Is Linux or Windows better for a FiveM server?

Neither wins everywhere. Windows is closer to what the FiveM team supports; Linux avoids an OS license and is easier to automate. Pick the one that fits your skills and resources.

Is Linux faster than Windows for FiveM?

We have no benchmark and will not claim it. The hardware, the scripts and OneSync settings usually matter far more than the operating system.

Does txAdmin work on Linux?

Yes. It is built into the FiveM server files on both platforms. See txAdmin on Linux.

Why is the Linux FiveM server a courtesy port?

That is the wording used in the official FiveM documentation. It means the Windows version is the primary one for fixes.

Can I use the FiveMRides panel on Windows?

No, it needs Debian 12 or 13, or Ubuntu 22.04 and newer.

Is Windows Server more expensive for a FiveM VPS?

Often the plan includes a Windows license cost, but it depends on the host and plan, so compare the price for both on the host’s site.

Can I switch from Windows to Linux later?

Usually yes, the resources and database can be moved, but test on a spare server first.
