Best Pictures for an AI Ped: Tips for Better FiveM Peds

The best picture for an AI ped shows one full-body character standing straight, arms a little away from the body, evenly lit on a plain background, feet in the frame. The AI builds a 3D model from what it sees and guesses the rest, so every part you show is a part it does not invent.

By FiveMRides. Updated . Peds from the AI Ped Creator were tested in game on FiveM with GTA V Legacy. GTA V Enhanced has not been tested.

Quick answer
  • Frame: the whole character, head to feet, nothing cut off.
  • Pose: standing, arms angled down and away from the body, legs a little apart.
  • Light: even and neutral. Strong shadows get painted into the texture.
  • Background: plain, with the character clearly separated from it.
  • Views: front and back of the same outfit are the best pair. Left and right help with thick clothing and big hair.
  • Hands: empty, and no loose capes.

What makes a good reference image for an AI 3D character?

The AI does not know your character. It reads the picture and builds a mesh and a texture from it. Whatever is hidden, such as the back of a jacket, the inside of a hood or the sole of a boot, is a guess that looks plausible but may not be what you pictured. Light and shadow in the picture end up in the texture, and in game the GTA lighting is added on top.

Pose

  • Choose a standing pose, facing the camera. Sitting, running and leaning poses hide the body shape the skeleton needs.
  • Arms angled down and a little away from the body show the torso, and the fitting step works best from that pose.
  • Crossed arms, hands in pockets and hands behind the back hide the hands, and the AI then has to invent them.
  • Legs slightly apart show where the legs begin.

Extra views

One front picture is enough to start. Add the back when you can. The left and right views are for characters whose side looks very different, for example a thick coat, a backpack or a tall hairstyle. You can mix sources, but the views should show the same outfit and the same colours.

Light, colour and background

  • Even light from the front is best. Coloured light, neon rim light and hard shadows change how the colours come out.
  • A plain background helps the AI see where the character ends.
  • A sharp picture is better than a big one. A small blurry picture gives a soft texture, however large the final texture is.

Clothing and details that cause trouble

  • Capes, long coats and skirts that hide the legs can clip through the body when the ped moves, because the model is fitted to the skeleton as one piece.
  • Big hoods and hair that hangs over the shoulders move with the nearest part of the body.
  • Props held in the hands, such as weapons and bags, become part of the model. Leave them out of the picture and add them in game with a script.
  • Very thin details such as chains and loose straps may come out as bumps in the texture.

Use pictures you can use, and what the tool cannot fix

Use characters and artwork you made or have the right to use. A real person’s likeness or another company’s character can bring legal trouble on a public server, and that risk is yours.

A good picture reduces problems but does not remove them. There is no facial animation, loose clothing can still clip, the hands of a human character are the tool’s own (small hand details such as rings are not copied), and GTA V Enhanced has not been tested.

Photo, drawing or screenshot?

All three work. A reference image for an AI 3D character is the picture the AI builds the model from, so what matters is that the whole body is visible and that you have the right to use it. A photo of a real person needs that person’s consent if it is not you. The FiveMRides AI Ped Creator then fits the character to the GTA freemode skeleton so it can move in game; the full walkthrough covers the whole build.

No picture? Describe it

The tool can start from a text description. It makes reference pictures from the words, and the ped follows them. Describe every garment from head to feet with its colour, and say what the back shows (a print, a hood, a bag). Example: “Man in his 30s, short dark hair, black hoodie with a colourful graffiti print on the back, olive cargo trousers, light grey high-top trainers, fingerless gloves, plain background, arms slightly away from the body.” Say what is not there too (no cape, nothing in the hands). The tool then draws a front and back sheet and waits for your approval before it builds anything.

Questions about pictures for an AI ped

What is the best picture for an AI ped?

A full-body picture of one character, standing straight with arms slightly away from the body, evenly lit, on a plain background, with the whole figure and feet in the frame.

Should the character be in an A-pose or a T-pose?

An A-pose, with the arms angled down and a little away from the body, is a good choice. Crossed arms, hands in pockets and sitting poses hide parts of the body, so the AI has to guess more.

Can I use a screenshot or a drawing?

Yes, if the character is clear. Drawings and concept art work well when the outfit is easy to read. Make sure you have the right to use the artwork.

Which outfits cause trouble?

Capes, long coats, big hoods, skirts that hide the legs, hair that hangs over the body and props held in the hands can clip or look odd in motion. The tool fits them as part of the body, so loose parts move with the nearest part of the skeleton.

How many views should I upload?

Front and back are the most useful pair. Left and right help with thick clothing, a backpack or a hairstyle that changes a lot from the side.

Can I use a photo of a real person?

Yes, if you have the right to use the photo, and only for your own likeness or someone who agreed. A clear full-body photo works like any other reference image: standing, arms a little away from the body, plain background.

What makes a good reference image for an AI 3D character?

The whole character in frame, a standing pose with arms a little away from the body, even light and a plain background. Whatever the image hides, the AI has to guess.
