FiveM Chains Not Showing? Where to Find Them and 8 Fixes
Most “my FiveM chain is not showing” problems come down to three things: the resource is not running, the game was not reconnected after the chain was added, or the chain is there but in a different place than you expect, usually at the end of the neck slot list. Below is where chains sit in each popular clothing menu, then nine fixes in the order to check them, and what to do when a chain clips through a top or floats off the body.
- Where to look: illenium-appearance “Scarf and chains”, qb-clothing “Neck Accessories”, esx_skin “chain 1 / chain 2”, vMenu “Scarfs & Chains”. Add-on chains are usually at the end of the list.
- Check first:
ensureline inserver.cfgwith the exact resource name, a server restart, then reconnect. - Use a freemode ped: chains are made for
mp_m_freemode_01andmp_f_freemode_01only. - Clipping: the chain was shaped for another outfit. Use a version built over a t-shirt or a jacket, or a longer chain.
Where chains are in each clothing menu
Chains are clothing component 7, the neck slot, shared with ties and scarves. Every menu names that slot differently:
| Clothing menu | Slot name | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| illenium-appearance, fivem-appearance | Scarf and chains | Scroll to the end of the model list. |
| qb-clothing | Neck Accessories | Add-on chains come after the base game items. |
| esx_skin, skinchanger | chain 1 and chain 2 | chain 1 picks the model, chain 2 its texture variation. |
| vMenu | Scarfs & Chains | In the MP ped customization clothing list, freemode peds only. |
Chains made with the FiveMRides Chain Studio come with a README that lists every chain with its number for each gender, so you know exactly which item to pick.
8 fixes, in the order to check them
1. The resource is not running
Check that server.cfg has ensure followed by the exact folder name of the chain resource, and that the folder is inside resources. Watch the server console when it starts: “Couldn’t find resource” means the name or the folder is wrong, and any error printed for that resource means a broken manifest or file.
2. You did not reconnect
New clothing is read when the game loads it. After adding a chain, restart the server and reconnect your game; a live restart of the resource is often not enough. If you replaced files that keep the same names, clearing your FiveM cache forces a fresh download.
3. You are on the wrong ped or gender
Clothing chains only exist for the ped they were made for. Custom ped models do not get freemode clothing, and a chain exported for one gender is not in the other gender’s list. Switch to mp_m_freemode_01 or mp_f_freemode_01 and check both.
4. It is there, just further down the list
Add-on items are listed after every base game item of that slot, so a new chain is usually near the end, with a high number. In esx_skin, set chain 1 to that number first; chain 2 only changes the texture variation of the model you picked.
5. Something else is using the neck slot
A tie, a scarf or a uniform piece in component 7 replaces your chain: the slot holds one item at a time. Job outfits, saved outfits and uniform scripts often set component 7 when they load, so put the chain on after the outfit, or add it to the saved outfit.
6. The clothing menu hides it
Some clothing menus have a blacklist, a whitelist per job or a fixed list of allowed items. If the chain shows with one menu (for example vMenu on a test server) but not with your main one, check that menu’s config for neck or accessory restrictions.
7. Saved outfits show the wrong chain
Clothing menus save a number, not a name. Adding or removing another add-on clothing pack, or changing sv_enforceGameBuild, can shift those numbers, so a saved outfit suddenly shows another chain or nothing. Pick the chain again and save the outfit.
8. Conflicting or broken files
Two replacement chains with the same teef number fight, and the last one loaded wins. Missing textures make a chain invisible or grey, a single texture over 16 MiB does not load in FiveM, and on a Linux server the stream folder must be spelled in lower case. Add-on chains avoid the number clash completely; if an old pack keeps fighting, rebuild it as an add-on (the Chain Studio can import an existing add-on chain pack and add to it).
Chain clipping through a shirt, jacket or hoodie
A chain is shaped once, for one outfit. It does not move out of the way of the top the player wears, so a chain built for bare skin sinks into a t-shirt collar, and a chain built for a t-shirt cuts through a jacket.
- Use a version made for the outfit. In the Chain Studio, set “worn over” to t-shirt (default), bare chest or jacket before you export. Each fit has its own minimum length: 50 cm bare chest, 53 cm t-shirt, 70 cm jacket.
- Make it longer. A longer chain hangs lower on the chest, away from collars and lapels.
- Hoodies and big collars are bulkier than any fit; pair heavy chains with open tops, or accept a small overlap.
- Female tops vary a lot at the neckline. Test the chain with the tops your players actually use.
Chain floating, stretching or not moving with the body
That chain is not properly skinned to the freemode skeleton, or it was made for the other gender. It has to be weighted to the neck, upper spine and collarbones and fitted to each body separately. Every Chain Studio export is skinned and fitted per gender; for a chain made elsewhere, ask its maker for a fixed version.
Gold looks flat or like yellow plastic
The chain has no specular or normal map, so the GTA ped shader cannot draw highlights, or a large flat pendant face catches the sun as one colour. Chains from the Chain Studio carry their own specular and normal maps, and pendants get a slightly domed face for that reason.
Quick answers
Where are chains in qb-clothing?
In the Neck Accessories row of the clothing menu. Add-on chains are usually at the end of the list, after the base game items.
Where are chains in illenium-appearance?
In the Scarf and chains row (fivem-appearance uses the same label). Scroll to the end of the list for add-on chains.
Where are chains in esx_skin?
esx_skin and skinchanger list them as chain 1 (the model) and chain 2 (its texture or colour variation). Pick the model with chain 1 first, then its variation with chain 2.
Where are chains in vMenu?
In the MP ped customization clothing list, under Scarfs & Chains. It only works on the freemode male and female peds.
Why does my FiveM chain go through my shirt?
The chain was shaped for a different top, often a bare chest. A chain sits in the neck slot and does not move out of the way of the clothes you wear, so it has to be built for the outfit: over a t-shirt, over a jacket, or on bare skin. In the FiveMRides Chain Studio, pick the matching fit before you export, or make the chain a little longer.
